hannah’s recipe | sweet & simple french toast | technique modification | ingredient substitution

most people do not actively try to learn what God likes. well, one thing God likes is for God’s woman to cook meals for her family.

“she riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household.” (proverbs 31:15)

so i woke up and decided to happily cook for my children.

pancakes and french toast are a breakfast treat. add a quick picture like a robot, bunny, or monkey, and the children will enjoy their meal all the more.

technique modifications:

  • the bread was not lightly toasted, bypassing step 1.

  • all ingredients (with the exception of the bread) were placed in a blender and blended on the liquid setting, making mixing fast and easy. the wet ingredients went in first to help with the blending.

  • a plastic lunch container that fits sandwiches was used to hold the batter and soak the bread. why? it combined the perfect fit with the perfect container. this recipe does not make a large volume of batter. a long and wide glass dish would have spread the batter out too thin.

  • fruit is always a nice side to have with pancakes or french toast. a banana was cut and quickly arranged into a robot - bunny - monkey picture. what can i say? kids like animal and robot pictures in their food.

ingredient substitutions:

  • original soy milk was used versus unsweetened, enhancing the french toast even more with the vanilla and sugars already present in the milk.

  • cinnamon was doubled for extra scent and flavor.

  • regular all-purpose flour was used because whole wheat flour is less of a staple pantry item in most households that do not bake wheat bread or muffins regularly.

  • ezekiel cinnamon raisin was the bread of choice, banishing the need to toast the bread while adding additional texture and flavor to the french toast. ezekiel is stiff enough as it stands. with step 1 skipped, no toaster or oven was required.

what child doesn’t like a robo bunny monkey on his or her plate?
